1. All about turnovers

Every game has a turning point when a team cedes control. A moment where the team that wins grabs the game.

You hope that moment comes later in the game. But the Orlando Magic lost grip and fell all the way down the mountain in a 30-point loss to the Toronto Raptors very early on Wednesday.

The game did not start like that. The Magic had an early seven-point lead. Their defense was denying shots in the paint. The ball was moving, and players were getting downhill and to the foul line.

Everything unraveled for one reason: Turnovers.

The Magic had seven turnovers in the final 7.5 minutes of the first quarter. Franz Wagner committed seven of the Magic's 14 turnovers in the first half. He and Anthony Black combined for 11 of the Magic's 20 total turnovers.

Toronto has the best defense in the league to start the season. The Raptors feast on mistakes and getting out in transition. That has been the core of their identity for nearly a decade.

The Magic were struggling with turnovers before they arrived in Toronto. This is a team still figuring out how to play together and play under a new coach. Mistakes are expected. But the Magic let them pile up. It has cost them games.

And another turnover-heavy game will cost them against the Raptors again.

2. Shooting ups and downs

NBA teams like to say this is a make-or-miss league. All anyone can do is generate the good looks. Soemtiems the shots go in, sometimes they do not.

The Orlando Magic are trying to increase their attempts and get more threes up. At the very least, hitting 40 3-point attempts seems to be a sign of their offense being healthy.

The Magic's attempts are up, but they are still making those attempts early in the season at the same rate they did last year. The Magic's shooting is not improving dramatically.

Wednesday's game was especially bad. Orlando had only 38 attempts. The team was 5 for 17 on wide-open threes, according to tracking data from NBA.com. It was another bad shooting night and that helped collapse every other aspect of the team's game.

The Toronto Raptors entered Wednesday's game with the second-worst 3-point percentage in the league. They were going to get a hot game -- like the Orlando Magic did against the New York Knicks. Their 15-for-35 showing bumped them up to 27th in the league for the season.

Whoever makes shots wins the game. Who knew?

3. The stars

Both the Orlando Magic and Toronto Raptors are down arguably their best players. Paolo Banchero is out with a high ankle sprain. Kawhi Leonard is out with knee swelling.

Both teams have shown in the past that they can win without them and win pretty big. The Magic should not be wallowing in their misfortune with Paolo Banchero and Jalen Suggs out. The team has enough to compete.

But when players are out, players do not have to necessarily shift roles, they just have to play their roles better.

That is what happened for the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday.

R.J. Barrett had 21 of his 25 points in the first half to power the Raptors into the lead. Scottie Barnes had 18 of his 28 points in the scond half to put the finishing touches on the game.

The Magic's two remaining stars? They probably could not have played worse.

Franz Wagner had 15 points, five assists and seven turnovers on 4-for-11 shooting. Desmond Bane had 13 points on 3-for-14 shooting.

Quite simply, the Magic are not winning any games if both of these players are playing this poorly. Orlando needs its best players to contribute and score. That is the only way this team survives.

Orlando Magic at Toronto Raptors: Prediction

2027 Record: 1-3/1-3 ATS

It would be hard to imagine the Orlando Magic playing as poorly as they did in Wednesday's game. Everything that coudl go wrong did go wrong.

And while that revealed some inherent weaknesses that Magic fans have known for a long time, the Magic will find fixes to get around it.

The Toronto Raptors also played extremely well.

They made 3-pointers for the first time all season and that only compounded the problems the Magic faced. Everyone is still figuring out their level. The Magic and Raptors are included.

What does that mean for Friday's NBA Cup tilt? It should make for a better game.

Right now, the Magic are still too mistake prone to go up against a team that is so good at putting pressure on the ball. And this game feels like it still turns on those turnovers.

The Magic are looking for somehwere to catch their breath. After struggling through this first phase of the season, that relief is not too far away if they can take advantage of it.
