Is there a hidden gem shooter on the roster?

The Orlando Magic spent most of their offseason trying to maintain the roster that got them to the NBA Playoffs. The team had big decisions to make with Nikola Vucevic and Terrence Ross.

It appears they simply decided the best they could get in free agency was what they already had. And, valuing winning, that made it important to return the same roster.

The only new player of significance for the Magic is forward Al-Farouq Aminu. He will help add plenty of depth for the forward position. But he probably does not fit the biggest needs for the Magic.

The Magic are not going to find a true perimeter creator in Summer League. But one need they should be seeking out here is the potential of adding another shooter. Finding someone who could provide that boost from the outside.

There are a few guys on the Summer League roster who will take on that shooting role.

The Magic brought former Florida State Seminoles sharpshooter Braian Angola-Rodas onto the Summer League roster last year and to the Lakeland Magic because of his shooting ability. He gets the respect of being a shooter in a lot of circles, but he has struggled to shoot as a pro. Rodas made only 35.1 percent of his 3-pointers.

More from Analysis

Of the guys coming from the Lakeland Magic, John Petrucelli might be the best bet to be a standout shooter. He made 44.2 percent of his 3-pointers (with just 2.7 attempts per game) last year.

Northern Arizona Suns forward Peter Jok shot 40.9 percent from beyond the arc. He has developed as a solid 3-pointer shooter and his versatility is something the Magic value from wing players. He is definitely someone to watch.

Tulsa Golden Hurricane wing DaQuan Jeffries was considered one of the best players not drafted and will play Summer League with the Magic. He was a 36.6 percent 3-point shooter last year in college, well below his previous two seasons, and could be a solid shooter.

Northwestern Wildcats forward Vic Law had a down year shooting last year at 33.8 percent but shot better than 35 percent in his three other seasons in Evanston. And then there is UCF Knights point guard B.J. Taylor who shot 37.2 percent from three as a high-usage point guard.

The Magic should have no shortage of potential 3-point shooters they want to watch. Whether any of them will emerge and impress enough to get a roster spot is the mystery. But the Magic should have some options.
