Alex Martins is Stephanie McMahon

By Philip Rossman-Reich

Every good story needs a villain. And no one is more villainous than the boss. Sometimes literally.

In this case, it is literally.

Stephanie McMahon, daughter of the company’s chairman Vince McMahon, is an actual board member in the publicly traded WWE. She does have a job running the business of the company.

But she is also a character on the show. The “evil boss” who gets in the way of the good guy and makes their lives harder. She played the role well.

If there is a criticism of her character it is that she often inserts herself into storylines and the show becomes about her and her motivations rather than the wrestlers and talent. Her character is important, but perception is everything. Starting every show herself seems to take attention away from the other performers.

Not that she does not play the role masterfully.

The boss does have a powerful villain quality to them. Everyone can relate to hating their boss — even those who are in charge already.

This is how things are playing out with the Magic right now. Whether he did or not, the perception is Magic CEO Alex Martins meddled too much in the basketball operations and pushed the Magic into a bad place. He destroyed the good intentions of the Magic’s rebuild and pushed his own interests.

Or that is how the narrative goes. This is wrestling after all. Who knows what is real and what is fake?
