Tyler Harvey

The big name for Magic fans to watch this week is Tyler Harvey.

The second round pick from last year was purposefully kept in Erie the whole season so the team could retain his draft rights for when they have a roster spot. It is not clear if they have that roster spot to give to him yet.

Harvey’s future with the team is both in his hands and the Magic’s hands.

Last year for Erie, he had his moments. He famously put up a big shooting game around New Years’ Day and can still put those games up. He was the leading scorer in the NCAA during his senior year.

He averaged 11.9 points per game with the BayHawks last year and 46.1 percent effective field goal percentage. Harvey’s game has always been about volume and not about efficiency for sure.

The question is whether he can take the step up and become a useful NBA player as a second round pick. Can he even become a passable score-first point guard off the bench?

Harvey struggled in his first professional season. There is no doubt about that. He was fairly inconsistent and did not even score at a high rate for his usage and time on the floor. And certainly things will be tougher in the NBA than it would be in the D-League.

Harvey certainly looked a bit different in his first game back with the Magic. He was noticeably bigger and more muscular along with more patient with the ball. His shooting was still a bit inconsistent — 2 for 9 from the floor and 1 for 6 from beyond the arc in his first Summer League game — but Harvey certainly looked a lot more comfortable on the floor.

The Magic did invest a second-round pick in him and so they will be looking to see what they can get out of him. A training camp invite could be on the line this week, otherwise Harvey may have to spend another year in Erie or get stashed in Europe, where he might get more freedom to play his style of game.
