Up and down would be the best way to describe Ilyasova’s time with the Magic this season. Ilyasova would have a stretch of solid basketball in him, and then disappear for a few games. This may have been due to the fluctuations in his minutes due to Aaron Gordon’s strong play in the second half of the season.
Ilyasova’s numbers declined this year and that is mainly because of his new bench role with the Magic. He saw his points per game, minutes per game and field goal percentage all take a hit. One stat that remained at a very good level was his 3-point percentage. He averaged just better than 40 percent from the field and finally gave the Magic the perimeter scoring they lacked.
Other than the aforementioned 3-point shooting, Ilyasova was more of a liability on offense. He had some circus and-one plays, but he has a very simple offensive game. He does not provide much “pop” off of the bench.
Defensively, Ilyasova was an improvement over what the Magic would normally put on the floor. He was by no means a lock-down defender but he was much better than what Magic fans were accustomed too.
On the perimeter, Ilyasova was a liability against smaller players because he lacks lateral athleticism. But he was not afraid to take a charge. Although, sometimes it got him into trouble by racking up a lot of blocking fouls.
