Eventually this is the direction the team has to go, right?

You do not spend what you spend to get Elfrid Payton (Dario Saric and another first round pick) without envisioning him as a starter, or at least playing starter’s minutes.

  • The Magic are bringing Payton along slowly. He has had moments where this looked really foolish and moments where this looked really smart — see: his struggles against the Hawks’ pressure defense Friday. Payton’s time will come. It appears the Magic have made that decision now and put Payton into the starting lineup.

The only issue with going with an Oladipo-Payton backcourt is the lack of shooting. Yes, they would be (and will be) a terror on defense. But teams are still giving Oladipo the jumper and no one is paying much attention to Payton as a shooter right now either. Both have to show they can consistently hit jumpers.
