1. Historic starts

If everything for every team starts with their star players, then Anthony Edwards and Paolo Banchero turned in stellar debuts to the season that deserve plenty of praise and recognition.

Edwards scored 45 points and made 9 of 17 from three for the new-look Minnesota Timberwolves' offense. Edwards is one of the best pure scorers in the league. He has not missed a beat and should be in line for All-NBA, captain of the World Cup team this summer in Qatar and all those accolades.

Banchero was not too shabby either.

He scored 35 points on 10-for-12 shooting and made 12 of 16 from the foul line. Banchero was efficient and quick with his decisionmaking, showing a real taking to the Magic's new offense and the way it operates -- even if six turnovers still stand out.

Banchero became the first player to score 35 points, dish out 10 assists and shoot better than 80 percent in a season opener in NBA history.

What do both players have for an encore?

2. Defense?

The Orlando Magic know that defense needs to be their identity. That is what carried them to the Playoffs in the last three years.

And while offensive frustrations have been the story, the offense now looks and feels a lot smoother. What nobody knows is how sustainable that offense is. That is what more games will tell us.

But that is why the defense remains so important. Defense travels and that is the key to long-term success.

What the Magic want to see is a better overall defensive showing. The Atlanta Hawks scored 132 points in the opener and posted a 118.9 offensive rating. That is hardly the defense the Magic remember.

But there were positive signs from Orlando's defense.

In the second half, the Magic gave up 60 points, but only 22 points in the paint. The Magic posted a more solid 111.1 defensive rating. There were some good things in that game.

More importantly, the Magic got back to forcing turnovers, forcing 17 turnovers for 18 points and a 15.3 percent turnover rate overall.

There are still things to improve. The second quarter still happened. The Magic made a lot of silly fouls. They failed to get the stops when they needed in crunch time and let Nickeil Alexander-Walker get loose from three -- 4-for-7 in the second half alone for 22 of his 31 points.

But the defense may not be as far back as anyone thinks.

3. Points in the paint

Whenever Rudy Gobert is involved in a game, teams always have to be wary of him lurking around the rim and challenging and swatting every shot that comes near him. The approach to the paint is never quite the same.

The Orlando Magic need to be a paint team. Their shooting and spacing might be improved, but it still depends on them getting into the paint first and then kicking out to open shooters.

Orlando was decent in the paint, scoring 50 points on 25-for-38 shooting. That does not count the free-throw attempts the Magic got.

The Minnesota Timberwolves are a 3-point-heavy team. They scored only 38 points in the paint in their win over the Miami Heat and took 50 3-pointers.

But despite having Gobert, the Wolves still gave up 54 points in the paint to the Heat. A lot of that was probably from Giannis Antetokounmpo. But the mantra remains: Win the paint, win the game.

Orlando Magic vs. Minnesota Timberwolves: Prediction

2027 Record: 0-1/0-1 ATS

Friday's game feels as much like a must-win game as a second game of the season can be for the Orlando Magic.

The team cannot afford to go 0-2 on an opening two-game homestand with a daunting three-game road trip ahead. The path throughout the NBA is not easy this year with so many teams vying to be competitive. There are no gimme games anymore. But every team still has to scratch out wins.

Still, the start to the season can have a little bit of randomness. Teams are still figuring themselves out. Some days, they look great, others they do not look good.

Orlando had an up-and-down opening game. But there was far more good than bad. This is a chance to show that. With all the talk during the past two days about the defense -- and the defense being bad, but not as bad as it felt live -- I would expect the Magic to come in locked in on defense.

The Minnesota Timberwolves probably hit a high-water mark for their potential in their win Wednesday in Miami. Their shooting probably will not be as scorching as it was -- 21 for 50. Especially if the Magic defend better -- and if the Magic themselves shoot better, which, at this point, who knows what is real about their 3-point shooting aside from taking more attempts.

This may still feel like an early season game. But Orlando feeling like it has things it can correct and going out there and correcting some of those things feels like the spot here for the team to get its first win this season.
