1. Getting the defense right

The story of the Orlando Magic's preseason has been a seeming offensive revival.

The team's 3-point attempts are way up. The team has showcased more ball and player movement. The emphasis on spacing and playing fast has seemingly taken hold. It has been an encouraging start to the preseason for the Magic's biggest weakness.

What everyone might fail to realize is that the Magic finished second in the league in offensive rating in the preseason last year -- albeit 15th in the first half. Orlando is currently 10th in the league in first-half offensive rating at 117.0 points per 100 possessions and ninth for the entire game at 115.4 points per 100 possessions.

Offense was the issue, but it did improve last year. The issue for the Magic was a stunning slip defensively to 12th. Orlando is not going anywhere without the defense.

And the defense in the preseason has shown signs of life with its physicality but has also fouled a lot. There is a lot to fine tune in the scheme the Magic are trying to run.

The results so far are not statistically pleasing.

The Magic are 27th in the league with a 114.6 defensive rating (a number that would have them 18th in the league last year). In the first half, the Magic are posting a 110.1 defensive rating, good for 12th in the preseason (and would be third last season).

There are good signs out there that this Magic defense will recover.

2. Paolo and Franz

The first two preseason games saw Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner ease their way into the offense.

They both got their turns trying to impose themselves, but they seemed like they were more focused on keeping the ball moving and making quick decisions, rather than being the threats to score that the Magic will need.

That all changed with Tuesday's game.

Banchero scored 24 points on 10-for-13 shooting to go with eight rebounds. Franz Wagner had 20 points on 7-for-10 shooting with eight assists -- his second game this preseason with more than five assists.

Suffice it to say, when those two players play with that much efficiency and force, the Magic are really hard to beat. And there should be no concern that those two are ready to drive this team into the season.

3. Heat win streak

It sounds stupid to even mention this because it is just the preseason. But it is a small point of pride for the Orlando Magic and something to keep monitoring.

Dating back to last year's preseason, the Orlando Magic have eight straight games against the Miami Heat -- two games in last year's preseason, a five-game season series sweep thanks to the NBA Cup quarterfinal victory and a Summer League victory this summer.

No matter how different all of those competitions might be, that is still pretty impressive.

The Magic had the Heat's Kryptonite last year. It has really been that way for several years with the Magic going 8-5 against the Heat in the last three years. They split the season series in 2025 and the Heat won 3-1 in 2024.

This is a rivalry -- even if the Heat still view it as a big brother/little brother. And these games mean something to the Magic. Even a preseason game.

Orlando Magic vs. Miami Heat: Prediction

2027 Preseason Record: 1-2/1-2 ATS
2026 Record: 55-36/39-52 ATS

This game either has the feeling that the Orlando Magic and Miami Heat both get what they want out of things and the starters sit with the game still in the balance, or this is a game where the Heat sit most of their veteran starters -- Giannis Antetokounmpo and Klay Thompson -- and just rest up for the regular season. In that case, the Magic's starters probably romp and continue to gain confidence.

You would hope it is the former.

The Magic should be eager to test themselves against a strong defense and find the trouble spots now, going through some adversity where they have to figure out how to problem-solve their way through issues and wrinkles in the offense.

Eithe way, this game probably gets determined by who wins the back end of the bench. That part was a struggle in Tuesday's game where the Osceola Magic crew struggled to close the game. They did the same in the win over the Memphis Grizzlies, almost spoiling a really encouraging night.

Either way, I suspect the Magic's starters will get some good work in and show some encouraging signs. But ther ewill still be plenty to work on heading into the regular season.
