The Orlando Magic's social media team instantly provided a booster shot for fans hunting for something magic in the last few weeks of the offseason.
The AdventHealth Training Center was busy the day after Labor Day, as the team released a photo dump showing Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner, Anthony Black, Wendell Carter, Nikola Vucevic, Goga Bitadze, Jase Richardson, Tristan da Silva and Jamal Cain all working out together.
It feels like Magic season is already here.

The Magic are a tight-knit group, but they are usually not all together like this so early in the season. It hints at excitement for the upcoming season and perhaps a determination to make the most of this season.
Labor Day is typically the time when most players return to their home markets. Surely, similar social media posts are circulating as teams run voluntary mini camps and get pick-up runs in together at their training facilities.
But the players getting together this early seems a bit different. It feels like it has purpose.
It feels like the Magic are trying to get a jump on the season. It feels like they know they need to get things started right.
They know they do not have any time to waste this season if they are going to make good on their potential and accomplish their extremely lofty goals. They need to make the most of every single moment.
Storm clouds are gathering around this Magic team this season. There is no time to waste for Orlando to be the team it believes it can be.
Cutting out the fluff
The Orlando Magic have exited the "nice, young team" phase of this build.
After three straight first-round exits, everyone is feeling the pressure to break through and reach the next level. The Magic are in the "meeting-expectations" phase of their build.
They clearly have not met those expectations after two injury-filled seasons the last two years.
The team can still embrace its youth. Nobody should be trying to change this team's personality. But the Magic do not have time to waste. They cannot give in to youthful exuberance. The expectation is to win.
They need to take all the lessons of their three previous playoff trips and turn that into something.
In 2024, the Magic professed that they learned they could not let random losses in January occur because that could determine their seeding and set them up for Playoff success. In 2025, they learned injuries are a huge factor and that they need to trust each other.
Both of those lessons have fallen flat. The Orlando Magic have dropped stunning games -- think the loss to the Indiana Pacers or the Boston Celtics late in the season. They lost some trust and faith in each other last year, especially as injuries overwhelmed the team.
In 2026, the Magic learned that an identity is not guaranteed. Nothing carries over year to year and everything needs to get rebuilt.
Their defense slipped from second to 12th last year. Orlando will spend much of its training camp rebuilding that identity.
The Magic are professing plenty of goals for the upcoming season. Franz Wagner said in an offseason interview that the Magic need a mindset shift. He wants to add more accountability to the team and add urgency.
Everyone coming together in Orlando early certainly suggests a team that is more serious and trying to be more locked in. They are milking all the time they can get together.
It will still take more.
Purpose from coaching
The biggest change the Orlando Magic made in the offseason was changing coaches.
Sean Sweeney and Jamahl Mosley will have a similar philosophy. They both want defense to lead the way. And the Magic's first task this season is to regain the defensive mentality.
Nobody really knows what kind of coach Sweeney will be -- this early time in the training center and Sweeney's time in the summer traveling to meet with players will be vital to establishing his process before training camp.
The way Sweeney speaks to media seems to signal that he will be a very intentional and deliberate coach. Everything he does will have purpose and he wants his team to do everything with purpose and drive.
That is a good change for the Magic. Jamahl Mosley's system and approach was tailor made for a rebuilding team. It gave young players a chance to explore the canvas and allow for mistakes.
Orlando certainly need an approach that allows the team to grow up. To be the team it wants to be, it will need direction and purpose.
The Magic should still play with Mosley's trademark joy. But the work comes first. And the Magic are putting in the work early.
Change is still inevitable
There is a lot of pressure on this season.
It is lingering in the background and everyone should be feeling it throughout the organization.
Calls for a mass deconstruction are probably premature. The Magic dealt with injuries during the last two seasons. Their ideal lineup was rarely on the floor together -- and when it was, it was very successful in both seasons.
But time is ticking for everyone. The Magic are feeling the pressure of salary cap realities. Everyone can sense that change is circling the Magic, whether they want it or not.
This group that has been together for five years is getting one last chance to prove how good they can be. Orlando has difficult decisions regardless of this season's outcome.
To survive and thrive, the Magic will need a new approach. They need to enter this season with more determination and more intention. There needs to be purpose and clarity from the start of the season.
The Magic need to be doing the work now to be ready for the season. They need to enter the season with purpose and intention.
That will be the only way they succeed.
