NBA 2K27 offers plenty of hope for the Orlando Magic

Orlando Magic fans are worried entering the 2027 season.

There is still a fair amount of belief in the team's core and the belief that a new coach in Sean Sweeney will net some different results. There is still at least a little belief that last year was an injury-induced fluke and the team can meet the heightened expectations they failed to meet last year.

The Eastern Conference is a lot better. Things could still go very wrong. And most of the predictions for the early season have the Magic landing right back in the Play-In.

Sportsbooks have the Magic as favorites to be back in the Play-In Tournament. ESPN's offseason predictions slotted the Magic at 10th. Ninth or 10th seems to be the going prediction around the league.

That is obviously not where the Magic want to be. Whether it is hesitance over the team's health issues, doubts about the offense or just an acknowledgement that there is so much talent in the East and somebody is going to be pushed to the bottom, the Magic are not considered among the contenders in the East.

That has only added to the pressure.

But even those who have placed the Magic in the Play-In Tournament can acknowledge their potential to get things right and their potential to compete in the East.

Orlando is not out of the mix by any means. The team just needs some proof of concept.

Since the Magic cannot earn that proof until they take the floor in October for the season, all they have is the release of NBA 2K27 to preview what this team will look like.

And the early reviews and simulations are that the Magic are indeed a sleeping giant.

A sleeping giant?

NBA 2K is the only full NBA simulation available. The video game prides itself on its attempt to be realistic and mimic the real NBA. If its simulation engine says something, it is not a guarantee that it will happen. But it at least deserves some aggregation.

And NBA 2K is loving the Orlando Magic early on.

Anthony Sulla-Heffinger of Yahoo! Sports ran a season simulation in the game's MyNBA Eras mode with trades turned off and rotations set to automatic. He kept injuries on.

One of the big surprises he found in his simulation was that the Magic earned the top seed in the Eastern Conference. The simulation predicted the San Antonio Spurs to sweep the second-seeded New York Knicks in the NBA Finals. He did not provide any details on how the Magic's season ended.

Still, that at least stands out as something odd for the Magic to rise to the top.

But it is just one simulation. That is meaningful but could be part of some aberration. Anything can happen in one simulation.

Liam McKeone of Sports Illustrated simulated the season 100 times using the game's MyNBA mode with standard settings (and acknowledging that Kawhi Leonard is still on the LA Clippers). That simulation also favored the Magic.

Orlando tied San Antonio with the most championships in 100 simulations with 19. McKeone reported the Magic regularly finished in the top three in all of those simulations and made consistent Finals appearances -- 33 total Finals appearances in 100 appearances.

Yes, one out of every three simulations had the Magic in the Finals.

Does that give fans any hope? Is that a sign the Magic are sleeping giants?

Our Simulation

I wanted to put it to the test. So I fired up my copy of NBA 2K and went into the MyNBA mode, the simplest season mode. I took control of the Orlando Magic -- giving me the ability to accept or decline trades (I declined every trade). But I let it run otherwise without intervention.

And the trend continued. The Magic were a juggernaut.

At the end of the NBA Cup group play, it had the Magic at 11-6 and fourth in the East after group play ended.

The Orlando Magic advanced in the NBA Cup to the knockout round, defeating the Indiana Pacers in the quarterfinal and the New York Knicks in the NBA Cup semifinal.

My simulation had the Orlando Magic winning the NBA Cup over the Minnesota Timberwolves, naming Paolo Banchero the NBA Cup MVP with 21.3 points per game, 8.4 rebounds per game and 49.5 percent shooting. The Magic were 16-6 and first in the East after the NBA Cup.

I stopped the simulation again at the All-Star Break (after being offered James Harden in a trade package involving Anthony Black and offers for Desmond Bane that included De'Aaron Fox and Jimmy Butler) and had the Magic at 43-16 and first in the Eastern Conference.

The dominance continued to end of the season.

The team in my simulation ended the season at 62-20 and with the top record in the NBA. Banchero was named to the All-NBA Third Team with 19.6 points per game, 7.9 rebounds per game and 48.8 percent shooting. Franz Wagner finished with 18.0 points per game on 49.9 percent shooting. Desmond Bane had 17.4 points per game and shot 36.2 percent from three.

The team had a 117.2 offensive rating and 102.7 defensive rating (+14.5 net rating) in the simulation.

The playoff simulation had the Orlando Magic sweeping the 8-seed Chicago Bulls and 4-seed Detroit Pistons. But they lost to the New York Knicks in seven games. The Portland Trail Blazers won the title over the New York Knicks in six games.

You can see how this can be kind of fantastical. But these results seem to track what Sports Illustrated and Yahoo! found in their simulation. NBA 2K likes the Magic this year.

Where the Magic rate

Does this mean anything? Not likely.

The Orlando Magic are a team that the video game likes for some reason. But take that with a grain of salt.

It also seems to acknowledge the doubts surrounding this team.

In the game's MyNBA mode, the Magic have a 92 overall. That ranks 11th, behind notably the Washington Wizards in the Eastern Conference. The Dallas Mavericks have a higher team rating than the Magic.

Orlando landed three players in NBA 2K's top 100 players. But Paolo Banchero did not arrive until No. 27 at an 87 overall, Franz Wagner landed at No. 48 as an 85 overall and Desmond Bane sits at No. 65 with an 84 overall.

It is not a team lacking in talent. But that is not screaming a team that is about to contend for a title.

The Magic still have a lot of questions to answer. And a video game is not real life. It is not going to be able to simulate the ups and downs of a season. The Magic were all potential last year. They have a lot to prove on the court.

It is almost time to take the court and make good on this virtual success.
