4 big roster decisions for the Orlando Magic

Does the team need more forward depth?

In a short answer, yes.

A gluttony of guards means there has to be shortages elsewhere. When it comes to the frontcourt the Orlando Magic do not have a ton of options.

While there are a lot of players who can play different positions on the roster, the current options to start at both small forward and power forward appear to be two of Jonathan Isaac, Chuma Okeke and Franz Wagner.

Gary Harris might sneak in there too, but at 6-foot-4, he is undersized to start at small forward. R.J. Hampton too has seen minutes at small forward and with his reported growth spurt, he might make some sense at forward too. Orlando has shown a willingness to try three-guard lineups so far in Summer League. And Isaac is also working his way back from a serious injury.

That raises a lot of questions.

The young forwards will have plenty of opportunity, but not handing them too much responsibility too early is important. They have to be able to develop at the right pace and play roles which suit their current ability.

And despite winning taking a backseat for now, the team still has to be put in a position to be able to battle. It is vital if the team is to succeed in the future and the young players are to grow.

Competition for places is also important. The Magic need players that can put pressure on the younger ones and can educate them at the same time.
