4 teams the Orlando Magic could target for draft day trade
Orlando Magic Draft Trade Targets
Golden State Warriors
Typically the teams that move around in the draft are the ones with multiple picks. They try to package those picks to move up and around the draft.
The Golden State Warriors are in a weird spot. They are trying to get back into the championship picture. They are more likely trying to use their two picks to grab another star player or veterans. The last thing the Warriors want is more young players it seems.
Golden State, then, has motivation to make a move Thursday on Draft night. And team with motivation will find a way to get things done.
So maybe the move here is to help the Golden State Warriors clear some cap room and consolidate their picks, allowing the Orlando Magic to grab a third Lottery pick.
Golden State Warriors
The Warriors could easily package the seventh and 14th picks and trade them for eight. Orlando might even toss in Gary Harris and his $20.5 million expiring contract with some other veteran filler and take back Andrew Wiggins.
Andrew Wiggins’ contract felt onerous last year when the team was considered a potential trade-up target for the second pick in James Wiseman. But Wiggins now had only two years left on his deal, albeit for $65 million total. It would effectively kill the Magic’s ability to make trades for two years.
But Wiggins is a natural scorer. And his time in Golden State has taught him the value of defense. While the rest of the roster grows, Wiggins might provide stability until the rest of the team grows.
That might be a stretch. And Harris alone may not be enough for the Warriors to give up so much draft capital. The Warriors might prefer Terrence Ross and his offensive spark in that case. Ross will be in high demand as the trade market opens and the Magic seem open to moving him.
The team is not going to get under the cap. So it feels like the Warriors are holding onto the Wiggins contract to make a bigger all-in move with a superstar player like Bradley Beal, whom they have reported interest in.
Orlando is not likely going to be able to provide the player that moves the needle significantly toward the Warriors winning a title.
It is also not entirely clear whether the Magic even want a third pick. While there is some thought of the Magic trying to move back into the first round using the No. 33 pick, there is definitely a sense the Magic do not need a third rookie to an already young roster.
Having the right player available though could change everything. And that is ultimately what any deal would come down to.
