Peter Jok, Northern Arizona Suns

The Orlando Magic have a lot of players from their G-League affiliate in the Lakeland Magic on the roster. More than any other team or source on the roster.

But the best G-League prospect on their roster might be one they poached from elsewhere.

Peter Jok had a solid college career with the Iowa Hawkeyes, averaging 19.9 points and 5.5 rebounds per game as a senior. He had a difficult first year in the pros but turned in a solid season with the Northern Arizona Suns last year.

He averaged 14.3 points and 4.7 rebounds per game while shooting 40.9 percent from beyond the arc last year. Jok did not get any NBA looks with the young Phoenix Suns, but he is the kind of player the Orlando Magic will certainly like.

Those are good numbers as a baseline to get some notice. He is able to fill in a role and hit outside shots. He turned out to be one of the most efficient shooters in the draft. Create for him and he will make defenses pay.

The Magic certainly like players who show progressive improvement too. It usually signals the player’s willingness to work and continue improving. He was a solid shooter in college — 37 percent in four years at Iowa — and that has continued into the G-League where he eclipsed 40 percent last year.

These are all good places to start.

But Jok has good positional versatility and defensive instincts too. He is a solid defender — a necessity to play for Fran McCaffery at Iowa — and does a good job on that end.

Jok’s projection always had him as a 3-and-D kind of player. He was a dangerous outside shooter in college and is starting to show that more at the pro level. He moves really well without the ball. While he will not beat anyone off the dribble, he can get to his shot on a one-dribble pull up.

Peter Jok would play a role similar to Terrence Ross. Jok does not have the quick release or jump that Terrence Ross has. But he can squeeze his way through a defense and find open space to get his shot off. And it is likely going in if he loses the defense for a moment.

For an Orlando team that could use a wing 3-point shooter, Jok seems to be the perfect match. He is someone that clearly fills a need and has the talent to play that role successfully.

Jok needs the right situation where he could get notice. And the Magic, in desperate need of shooting and desiring versatility, could be a great landing spot for him.
