5 questions the Orlando Magic need to answer at Summer League
Who gets the Orlando Magic’s two-way contracts?
The Orlando Magic and the rest of the league are still figuring out how to use the two-way contracts best. Teams are still figuring out how to use this deal.
Amile Jefferson is one of the best G-League players there is and the Magic inked him to a two-way deal only to use him rarely in the regular season. Troy Caupain was a star for the Lakeland Magic and got his two-way opportunity. . . only to get passed over when the Magic actually needed a point guard.
Everyone is still getting a handle on how to use these contracts effectively. And figuring out how to get the most of the few days those players have with the main roster is still a puzzle. Neither Caupain nor Jefferson played any meaningful minutes for the team.
So this might be a minor thing at the end of the day.
Ultimately, the purpose of a two-way contract is to invest in a young player and then see him graduate to the main roster. It is not simply to turn over to the next new batch of players for the G-League team that may occasionally play and practice with the main roster.
For the second year of this experiment, the Magic are starting from scratch and looking for new blood to take these contracts.
Caupain was a graduate of the Magic’s Summer League team to get the two-way contract. Jefferson was someone they went out and got.
It is likely Orlando will use the same thought process in handing these deals out this time around.
Orlando will likely find one or two players to make its roster as a two-way contract here. John Petrucelli is a good candidate to do this. He has been solid for the Lakeland Magic the last two years. He seems ready to get a shot at the NBA.
But the team could go with several other players on the roster. Vic Law is a solid shooter with the size the Magic like. They could re-up with Jefferson when push comes to shove. Then there are players like Erik McCree, who has some NBA experience and played well in Italy.
Even B.J. Taylor would have a good chance with the Magic’s need to bolster their point guard position.
Orlando has two of these contracts to use. It is not clear if they would use it as insurance to depth on the main roster or use it to invest in a player they like. And there is always that last remaining roster spot to use.
Of course, the Magic are also on the lookout to fill out the Lakeland roster. There are several players who could get Exhibit 10 deals to go through training camp with the Magic. Orlando could then keep an eye on them with Lakeland throughout the season.
The Magic will have a lot to examine when Summer League begins.
