Best Game of 2019

Dec. 10 vs. Mavericks: 18 points, 7/10 FGs, 2/4 3FGs

There was not a whole lot memorable about the Orlando Magic’s trip to Dallas this year. The team was preparing for its pair of “home” games in Mexico City and still struggling to find its identity. The team was drifting aimlessly at this time.

The loss to the Dallas Mavericks was an extremely frustrating moment during that point of the season. Orlando lost by 25 points and looked completely lost.

It probably says something this became Jonathon Simmons’ highest-scoring game with the Magic this season. He scored 18 points and hit seven of his 10 shots. At last, Simmons showed that spark that had everyone excited, or at least intrigued, with how he would play this season.

At this point, it looked like Simmons was rounding some sort of corner. He scored eight points in both games in Mexico City, hitting six of his 11 shots in the pair of games. He scored another eight points in the return to the Amway Center against the San Antonio Spurs (another blowout loss). Things were moving back in the right direction.

The stretch was short-lived. Simmons had only three instances where he scored 10 points in consecutive games. And his shooting continued to go up and down.

This was a season where Simmons could never quite find his rhythm. And that hurt his production and ultimately his future with the team.
