No. 17 in The Step Back’s Mock Draft

Orlando-native Nassir Little has been the North Carolina Tar Heels’ highest-rated prospect all year long, but not as of late.

His fellow freshman Coby White has taken the country by storm as the NCAA Tournament draws near. This should not be too much of a surprise to anybody who pays close attention to college basketball.

White has been the cog that makes the UNC machine work this season. He put up 21 points just two weeks ago to seal the North Tar Heels’ regular-season sweep of the Duke Blue Devils.

At 6-foot-5, it is hard to tell if White will stay at the point guard position at the NBA level, but as the league continues to transition toward a positionless game, I am not sure that matters.

White has proven during the course of his freshman season he has the ability to score and distribute the ball. He averaged 16.3 points per game and 4.3 assists per game this season.

But I believe White’s biggest upside is outside of the numbers. He is able to make the players around him better through his passing, his defensive effort, and overall hustle through all aspects of the game.

As a combo guard, White should be high on the Magic’s big board as the NBA draft approaches.
