16. 1994 Shaquille O’Neal

8 points, 10 rebounds, 4 blocks, 2/12 FGs

Shaquille O’Neal rarely goes invisible on a basketball court. In fact, to shut him down and shut him out of a game takes some effort.

O’Neal’s second trip to the All-Star Game was exactly that.

After getting voted into the All-Star Game as a rookie, Shaquille O’Neal was the biggest star in the league with Michael Jordan now out of the picture (playing baseball). His presence in the 1993 All-Star Game, as a starter no less, did not sit well with many.

O’Neal was loud, boisterous and young. In a league full of veterans, that was still not something they were thrilled with. O’Neal still had to earn his place.

This All-Star Game, they made sure he took the lesson.

According to several accounts, Western Conference All-Star coach George Karl asked his big men — Hakeem Olajuwon, David Robinson and Shawn Kemp — to keep Shaquille O’Neal from going to the basket. O’Neal made just 4 of 11 free throws that day and found things difficult inside.

It was the roughest game of his All-Star career.

No one would cop to freezing out O’Neal. But even Gary Payton said George Karl told his team to send Shaquille O’Neal a message. In this one, he got a little bit of humble pie. Perhaps the last time anyone would keep O’Neal down.
