1. 1996 Shaquille O’Neal

25 points, 10 rebounds, 2 blocks, 10/16 FGs

Shaquille O’Neal’s final All-Star Game in an Orlando Magic uniform was perhaps his finest.

O’Neal by this time had well established himself in the league and begun to build his presence as an entertainment mogul. That was building and building for several years. Now O’Neal was at the peak of his powers. And he was willing to showcase all that on the big stage, as always.

O’Neal led the East in scoring for the second straight year. That was not enough to overtake Michael Jordan for MVP. O’Neal had at least two games where he could have poured in All-Star MVP worthy performances. This was the only one that came in a win.

To many, O’Neal should have won the MVP that year. It is probably the closest any Magic player has actually gotten to winning the All-Star MVP.

O’Neal missed most of that season with a hand injury. But he was all healthy for this game back in his hometown in San Antonio.

As Shaquille O’Neal would tell it, he wanted to show up David Robinson because of an invented slight. And he certainly did that in this game. He did not get the reward for his efforts.

Nikola Vucevic finally has his All-Star spotlight. dark. Next
