The Orlando Magic unveiled their new City Edition jerseys, toning down the space theme from last year, but keeping things largely the same.

The NBA has slowly begun rolling out the new “City Edition” jerseys and the Orlando Magic announced their new jerseys. These will replace the Magic’s space uniforms from last year. Each team in the league is getting a new City Edition jersey.

The new jerseys are very similar to last year’s jerseys. It is black with the Magic’s secondary logo prominently across the chest. The starry sky design though has been taken off the main design for the jersey.

The unveiling video does not really give a clear look at the jerseys.

Unlike last year, the space theme does not take over the entire uniform. They have relegated the stars design to side paneling on the jersey and shorts this year. The space theme from last year does continue, but it is far less pronounced than it was last year.

The Magic explain the meaning behind the jerseys this way, per a press release:

"The Magic’s City Edition uniform celebrates Orlando as a city of dreamers. The uniform keeps the iconic symbol for the Magic over the years front and center and features a shimmery cosmic look and feel. Symbolic of reaching beyond the limits, the City Edition breaks from the team’s pinstripe tradition for a unique take on the Magic name."

The team will debut the uniforms Nov. 14 against the Philadelphia 76ers at the Amway Center. The team announced this will be the fifth and final jersey the team will wear this year — along with the traditional white and blue jerseys, the black jersey alternate and the team’s classic blue pinstripes.

Teams that made the Playoffs last year got a special “Earned Edition” jersey that will debut later this year. Select teams, like the Magic, are also wearing Classic Edition jerseys of old jersey designs. The Magic next wear those against the Detroit Pistons next week.

No one will blame Nike and the team for trying to tie in the space industry again. Last year’s City Edition jerseys got some mixed reviews. Some people liked the originality of the design — and it looked better in person than it did on paper. Others were not a fan of the idea. But it was definitely a bold and adventurous design for the team. It was something different at the very least.

This one is certainly a bit more muted. But it probably will not do much to inspire a ton of Magic fans to put it in the pantheon of Magic uniforms. Especially when the team is wearing the beloved blue pinstripe uniforms as part of the team’s 30th anniversary season.

The Magic’s uniform set for this season is now complete. The City Edition jerseys will go on sale beginning Nov. 9.
