Overall Outlook

Evan Fournier is going to do what he has done for the last three years. He has established himself as a reliable offensive option for the team. Albeit, someone the Orlando Magic have asked to do too much far too often.

That will likely be the case again this year.

For what Fournier is good at, Fournier will deliver. He is going to bring the necessary shooting the team needs.

Fournier is a reliable and efficient shooter, solid in the pick and roll and a good secondary scorer. As the Magic’s young players develop, Fournier will be in his prime and able to fill a role that he is more apt to fill. That is the hope at least.

That should start this year. If Aaron Gordon is truly ready to ascend to the mantle of leading scorer, then that will push Evan Fournier off the ball to a role that better fits his overall skills. That will not lead to a lower production, but he will help him and the team become more efficient.

Fournier will still be able to take over when the moment calls for it. Likely this year, Orlando will need him to carry that burden throughout the season. The Magic are hardly a complete team.

But the concern remains with Fournier that he will be a detraction defensively and will not be able to create enough to keep the offense going. Fournier is vital to the team’s offense, but ask him to do too much and inevitably the team will falter for it.

Unfairly, Fournier symbolizes part of the old regime. He received his big contract as a last act from Rob Hennigan. And moving on from him will be a specter that hangs over the franchise for a little while longer.

But Fournier is still valuable to the team. For his shooting most of all. And with the strong defenders that project to surround him in the near future, maybe the team can cover some of his defensive shortcomings.

At the very least, the Magic can rely on Fournier to provide the same production and solid shooting that characterized his solid year last year.

For now, that is probably enough.
