Overall Outlook

In plenty of flashes, Jarell Martin had moments where he looked like a strong player.

He could use his size to roll through the lane and finish above the basket with thunder. He can pop out to the elbow area and hit jumpers with ease when his feet are beneath him. The Orlando Magic saw Martin do this best last year when he played against them in both games for the Memphis Grizzlies.

But the consistency is far from there with him. That is obviously why he was on the market and now finds himself fighting for his spot with the Magic even coming off the bench.

Martin has the look and game of a traditional power forward in a league that is trending away from that archetype. He has the athleticism to hold his own, but not at an elite level. It feels like Martin is relegated to a bench role. That is at least how the Magic will plan things out to start his tenure with the team.

Martin has struggled to meet even the most modest expectations. Every time it looks like he is about to break through or has that big game, he struggles to match it. And so his play to this point of his career is pretty difficult to sort through.

Orlando likely slots him in as the backup power forward. They will give him some time and some space to play and prove his value in the league. It will be up to Martin to take advantage of that opportunity.

To this point, Martin’s play has been extremely uneven. And now he finds himself fighting for his ultimate spot in the league.
