The Orlando Magic have added two players to their training camp roster. The two players are likely heading to Lakeland to play in the G-League.

The Orlando Magic added two players to help round out their training camp roster and boost the Lakeland Magic for the upcoming season, welcoming back one familiar face into the franchise.

The team announced Wednesday it had signed guards Gabe York and B.J. Johnson to training camp contracts. They are believed to both be Exhibit 10 contracts. The Exhibit 10 contract is a one-year, non-guaranteed contract that offers some guaranteed money to players for training camp and options them for the franchise’s G-League team.

These contracts are part of rounding out a training camp roster, adding some extra bodies for training camp practices and even for preseason pickup games as roster players get ready for the season. Both of these players are likely to play for Lakeland more than Orlando.

They each could make their mark and have their chance to make the NBA at some point.

York may be familiar to some Magic fans. He had a standout year for the Erie BayHawks, the former G-League affiliate for the Orlando Magic, in 2017. He averaged 15.8 points per game with a 52.9 percent effective field goal percentage.

York put up some pretty gaudy scoring numbers as one of the team’s leading scorers and seemed to be knocking on the door for the league. Especially with his superb 3-point shooting.

The 6-foot-3 guard still had to improve his point guard skills. York averaged only 3.7 assists per game in Erie. And he proved he still had work to do the following summer when he played for the Charlotte Hornets in Summer League.

Last year, York played in Germany with Medi Bayreuth averaging 14.0 points per game and 2.4 assists per game. He made 35.6 percent of his 3-pointers that season.

York is an extremely good shooter and a volume scorer. He should be someone who provides some solid scoring for Lakeland this year. He possesses good length for a player at point guard, but he still needs to improve his playmaking and ability to run a team.

B.J. Johnson had a solid final year with the La Salle Explorers last year, averaging 20.8 points per game and 8.3 rebounds per game. He showed the ability to play both wing positions and improved dramatically as a 3-point shooter.

In his freshman year with the Syracuse Orange, he shot 2 for 16 and only showed a slight improvement in his sophomore year before transferring to La Salle.

That transfer gave him more opportunity. His scoring jumped up dramatically — to 17.6 points per game after averaging 4.2 points per game in half the minutes. And his 3-point shooting began improving, finishing at 35.9 percent his senior year last year.

Johnson looks more like the kind of players Jeff Weltman and John Hammond have targeted for their roster. He has good length and is a good rebounder for a player of his size. He is a solid athlete with a decent in-between game, something that might be a signal his 3-point shooting can continue to improve.

Johnson may be a player the Magic are especially excited to see what he can do at the G-League level with an eye toward including him in Summer League.

With these two signings, the Magic’s G-League roster is taking shape. They are added to the team’s other Exhibit 10 signing, Braian Angola-Rodas, who impressed in Summer league with his shooting potential. The Magic also have their two-way contract signees in Troy Caupain and Amile Jefferson.

A lineup of Troy Caupain, Braian Angola-Rodas, B.J. Johnson and Amile Jefferson is the beginnings of a strong G-League side. York could push for minutes in smaller lineups too. They all should contribute in the G-League.

Next. Orlando Magic need Terrence Ross to get it all back. dark

The question is how much they can impress in training camp and whether they can push to get some time on the main roster at some point during the season.
