6 players the Orlando Magic could pick in the 2018 NBA Draft
Collin Sexton, PG Alabama
It is never good to hold on to one moment in a college career and use that as a reason to draft a player. That is how you draft Jonny Flynn over Stephen Curry (although, was Flynn’s one moment better than Curry’s multitude of moments… oh, David Kahn).
Still, there are those moments that reveal a lot of character. Something that could help establish an identity if the player has the talent to match.
On Nov. 25 in Barclays Center, Collin Sexton put on one of those memorable performances. He scored 40 points and dished out five assists. Bold numbers to be sure. But that was not what was memorable.
Because of injuries and fouls, the Alabama Crimson Tide had to play 3-on-5. And they nearly won, falling to the Minnesota Golden Gophers 89-84. It was an incredible performance.
That kind of competitiveness and fire to put the team on his back showed throughout the rest of his freshman season. He averaged 19.2 points per game and 3.6 assists per game.
There are holes in his game. He is not a great shooter — 33.6 percent from beyond the arc — and his passing is not fantastic. He did not total a ton of assists. At this point, he is a scorer who tries to get all the way to the rim. Sexton has a quick burst, but he is not a dominant athlete ever.
Adding more intrigue to things, Sexton had a major dip through the middle of the season. He burst onto the scene at the start of the year and had a bright finish — averaging 24.2 points per game and shooting 47.8 percent from beyond the arc in the SEC Tournament and NCAA Tournament.
If the Magic are looking for someone who can collapse the paint and get to the rim, Sexton is probably as good a bet as any. He probably would need some shooters around him.
Magic fans already are a bit hesitant to go with another point guard with noted shooting problems. Although Collin Sexton is not nearly as bad as Elfrid Payton was in college.
