Silver lining of Orlando Magic’s season

Jonathon Simmons is an all-around beast
The Orlando Magic signed Jonathon Simmons to a three-year, $20-million contract in the offseason. He has outplayed that contract by a mile.
Even from the outset of the deal, the basketball world knew Orlando got a bargain in Simmons. He signed toward the end of free agency after the mega-deals were handed out, which explains why the Magic got him for such a bargain.
But Simmons wanted to prove himself and showcase his talent. Orlando has provided him with that opportunity.
Simmons is averaging 13.9 points per game on 46 percent shooting from the field in 29 minutes per game. This is an almost eight points per game increase than his previous two years in the league with the San Antonio Spurs.
The 6-foot-6 former G-League standout has become a fan favorite with his signature Euro-step and emphatic dunks. His jersey quickly appeared in the team’s merchandise store and cemented its place there.
It is easy to root for a guy who exemplifies humility, hard work and perseverance.
Simmons has displayed the ability to create his own offense and further developed his reputation as a hard-nosed defensive player. Simmons is a cornerstone piece for a good team and could possibly further develop his offensive game.
He scored a career-high 35 points against Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks on March 14. And his monster third quarter delivered a come-from-behind win over the Cleveland Cavaliers earlier in the month.
Simmons has shown an improved 3-point shot this season. He knocked down seven three-pointers in that March game against Milwaukee. Shooting was the only knock on his game early on in the season. But Simmons has grown more confident with his shot as the season progressed.
The 28-year-old Simmons has not reached his ceiling yet.
