Jonathan Isaac is a stud defender

Defense is the rookie’s calling card. He is averaging one steal and one block per game this season. He alters shots and clogs up passing lanes. Isaac is a threat defensively and will be a force to be reckoned with in years to come.

The most impressive Isaac defensive play was his block on Al Horford against the Boston Celtics on March 16.

Horford backed down the 6-foot-10, 222-pound rookie under the basket and then attempted to shoot a skyhook. But Isaac recovered on the play and swatted the shot to the waiting arms of teammate D.J. Augustin. Isaac later admitted he was still learning how to play the post.

It says a lot about Isaac’s defensive promise that despite his lack of bulk, he still can hold his own against a savvy veteran like Horford. Isaac’s natural defensive instincts have played a positive role for the team. It has made them demonstrably better.

While Isaac has played in only 27 games this year. His season has been disappointing mostly becuase he has not been on the floor. When he is on the floor, he has had that clear impact.

Among Magic players, the team has the best defensive rating on the floor with Isaac on the floor. Orlando gives up 101.1 points per 100 possessions with Isaac on the floor. Considering the team’s porous defense this year, that is a very positive sign.

It suggests what kind of impact Isaac can have.

Isaac’s defensive awareness and length allows him to play small forward power forward and even the center position going forward.
