James Johnson

James Johnson was a first round draft pick in 2009, but he has been a NBA journey-man ever since. The Miami Heat were his fifth team in his eight-year career. But it all came together and Johnson had a break-out campaign with the Heat.

Johnson attributed his success to finally getting in shape. He dropped 40 pounds, and his newfound mobility allowed him to guard every front-court position effectively. But it was not just defense where Johnson was effective. He produced more on the offensive end than ever before.

Johnson averaged 12.8 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.9 assists in just 27 minutes of action.  He also shot a respectable 34 percent from 3-point range.

But beyond the numbers, Johnson brings a physical presence to whatever team he is on.  He is a second-degree black belt.  He is 7-0 in MMA matches, and 20-0 in kickboxing matches.  In theory that means nothing on the basketball court.

But human nature would suggest he has an intimidation factor against everyone he faces. It also speaks to a determination and intensity that he possesses. Those qualities certainly show on the floor in his style. He is a grinder.

Even though Johnson had a great season, Miami seems to be looking for bigger names. They have been rumored to be in the hunt for Gordon Hayward. Miami likes to stay in the hunt for big names, so it seems unlikely they would commit to Johnson long-term.

James Johnson made $4 million this year, so he will be looking for a raise. But many times a player in a situation like Johnson, where they have bounced around the league, will value years over a higher salary.

The Magic could capitalize on that by showing faith and offering more years at a lower per year salary.  Thus potentially securing a versatile piece long-term, while remaining financially flexible.
