2017 NBA Draft: 2nd Round Gambles for the Orlando Magic
Josh Hart, Villanova
Josh Hart is a pretty good all-around player in this draft. Named the Big East Player of the Year and the Defensive Player of the Year, Hart standing at 6-foot-6, 204 pounds has solid size and strength to play the wing on both sides of the ball. But he has some flaws that will definitely need to improve in order to sustain an NBA career.
Hart is an efficient scorer who can get baskets from anywhere on the court if given space. He has improved his shooting going from 35 percent from the perimeter to 40 percent this year. But he might struggle from NBA range.
In the NBA, his game will be mainly a mid-range scorer similar to DeMar DeRozan. Hart averaged 18.7 points per game to go along with 6.4 rebounds, 2.9 assist and 1.6 steals per game.
Due to his average ball handling skills and speed, Hart has trouble at times creating separation from defenders. He can get stuck when driving to the basket and force up a tough shot.
The Magic need a go-to scorer. While Hart may have trouble turning the corner on NBA level wings, he may get space by having other good scorers around him like he had with the Villanova Wildcats.
Hart had an amazing NCAA Tournament run last year as Villanova won the national title. Instead of cashing in on his tournament run, Hart decided to return to school for another shot at a championship.
What that says to me is he loves the game and is a competitor. His extra year in college also helped him to improve on his shooting, making him a strong selection in the second round.
