The mini-contract year

This season is going to be huge for Elfrid Payton’s career. It may very well decide the value of his next contract, and whether he will stay with the Magic long term.

It is also apparent there is a wide range of possibility for his performance. He could be a very strong player, or could fail to become the player the Magic hoped he would be.

Payton will likely be a key factor in whether the Magic make the playoffs. And he may also be a big factor in whether ownership decides to stick with the front office going forward.

It is hard to argue against most of the moves they have made since the summer of 2012. But it seems the organization is growing impatient with the rebuild and has attempted to expedite it. If the young projects do not progress quickly, the franchise may opt to restart their rebuild.

Elfrid Payton will have a lot riding on his production this season. If he can just focus on his strengths, he could lead the team to the playoffs and earn himself a hefty extension.
