Overall outlook

Undoubtedly, adding Frank Vogel as the head coach is a positive for the Magic. He is one of the best coaches in the NBA. That has not delivered a championship, but it has delivered a lot of teams that outplay their talent level and, most importantly for the Magic, make the Playoffs.

Vogel has done this throughout his career. He has delivered elite defenses.

This is a different team than his Pacers teams. There is no doubt about that. There is no Paul George to save the day when possessions go bad. Who knows if the Serge Ibaka-Nikola Vucevic pairing will work as effectively as the Roy Hibbert-David West pairing worked with the Pacers.

Vogel has called back to what he did successfully in Indiana enough times during his various media availabilities this summer that he feels things should translate. His defensive philosophy will be key to anything the Magic do.

The way his team transitioned last year to remain one of the very best defenses in the league is a positive sign for the Magic.

It is hard to tell exactly how much better Vogel will make the Magic. But he is undoubtedly the best coach the Magic have had in their revolving door the past three years. He is someone the team can succeed with now and continue to grow with too.

That is about all a team can ask for in a coach.

If there is any reason to be optimistic about what the Magic can do, it is because Vogel can have that much power as a coach.
