Vogel’s worth

The Magic undoubtedly made a big upgrade at coach. Which is saying something since last year they saw a 10-win improvement thanks largely to internal development and a new coach — albeit a very flawed one.

Skiles can push a team to and past its breaking point. They will experience success, but how long they are willing to run through walls for him changes.

Vogel’s approach is different, but also effective.

And where the Magic began to tune Skiles out, perhaps, Vogel can hold their attention. That means Vogel should be worth more than a few wins on his own.

How much? That is a very good question. This is a brand new team. And so it is hard to tell just how much better the team is on its own — let alone how much value Vogel adds to them.

Vogel has a .580 win percentage for his career. That includes the two trips to the Eastern Conference Finals and five trips to the Playoffs in six seasons (the one season being the one where Paul George was out with his fractured leg).

That is certainly an incredible accomplishment. And even as things changed for the Pacers, Vogel rolled with the punches and adjusted. His team stayed consistent.

For the Magic, that suggests Vogel will get the most out of his team.

Vogel has a defensive knack. That should help build the Magic’s identity to begin with. He has developed players and kept a strong defense through several iterations of his team.

That is worth more than perhaps the talent on the team could get on its own. Vogel is a coach that should have a positive impact.
