What could go wrong

Aaron Gordon is a bundle of potential still. Despite increases in his statistics, it is still hard to unpack him completely.

Gordon’s numbers are still relatively modest.

He has all the ability to defend on the perimeter, but lacks the size to go in the post. He has the strength and speed to beat bigger players in the mid-post, at least, but not the shooting to stretch out to the 3-point line. Does that make him a 3 or a 4?

This remains the big question as he split his time between the two forward positions. He often played best with a player who was equally a tweener like him.

The Magic, with the acquisitions made to the front court, seem set to play Gordon primarily at small forward. That is a position that still does not seem to be his best fit. Not with his ball handling still a work in progress and his poor 3-point shooting — 29.6 percent.

Having him on the perimeter and away from the basket does not seem to be the best idea.

Gordon can still improve in these areas. The 20-year-old forward is still a clean slate. But perhaps too clean a slate for a team that needs immediate production. Especially from a player the team has invested so much in.

Things can go wrong for Gordon — and for the Magic — simply because so much has to improve for Gordon to get where they need to go. He should get better. He has to get a lot better though.
