Thon Maker, PF, Sudan/Australia, Orangeville Prep

Here is where things get interesting for the Magic. Thon Maker could go anywhere in the draft depending on who is willing to reach.

Maker has the talent and body to become the second coming of Kevin Garnett, but with the ability to handle the ball. Look out if he gets a chance to lead the fast break!

He is a legit seven-footer who fits a Magic need, a defender who can run the floor and finish on fast breaks.

Although a bit sluggish and uncoordinated in the post, he could learn to use his size and talent, especially with a session or two from Hakeem Olajuwon, to create mismatches on offense which should lead to extra opportunities for his team mates.

He seriously is the definition of a gamble that could pay off huge dividends. Most projections have him going late in the first round at the earliest. The Magic could try to sneak back into the first round to take him or hope he falls to them in the second round.

Strengths

  • Maker is a bit jumpy on defense, he can and will learn how to use his size and jumping ability instead of leaving his feet on pump fakes.
  • He is capable of being a solid jump shooter with time, something Orlando could use next to Nikola Vucevic. Solid baseline fadeaway jumper.
  • He is a solid shot blocker and rebounder.

Weaknesses

  • Maker is a poor isolation scorer, but the Magic would not need him in that role with the current roster.
  • Very thin frame, may not be able to add much weight.
  • Will need help studying the game. Fundamentally not ready for the NBA, will be a project player.
  • Needs to add consistency to his game.

Elfrid Payton should be able to set him up for easy dunks and alley-oops with his ability to penetrate the lane. He will occasionally make the NBA three pointer. Maker has one of the highest motors in the draft which should be welcomed off the Magic bench.
