SG. Orlando Magic. VICTOR OLADIPO. B-. <p>In actuality, Victor Oladipo did not have a bad season. The perception that his season was disappointing is a function of the expectations for his season and his development. The Magic needed a star and Oladipo was the one who was supposed to fill that. In that sense he came up short.</p><div class=

And Oladipo did come up short in other ways. He did not improve his shooting at the rim and finishing on his drives or getting to the line more. These were areas he had to improve on. But he also needed to improve his 3-point shooting and jump shooting too. And he did that successfully too.

He also established himself as a growing and great one-on-one defender. He did improve there under Scott Skiles. Oladipo was someone who Skiles could trust and did. His decision to move Oladipo to the bench was a function of creating a better lineup, not a statement of Oladipo’s play or skill.

He responded well to it for the most part — maybe taking some frustration out with the media. He scored well and kept up his defense. When he returned to the lineup he maintained his averages.

Oladipo did not make the star bump the Magic perhaps needed him to do, but he was still a quality player and still one of the Magic’s best players. The question is whether he will take that step up or if the Magic will have to rethink their role for him.
