Tyler Harvey

The Orlando Magic’s second round pick from last season agreed not to receive a training camp invite and play the whole year in Erie in the D-League so the Magic could retain his rights. Undoubtedly, Orlando will have him in again for Summer League and take another close look at their selection.

Last year for the Bayhawks, Harvey averaged 11.9 points per game and shot 34.6 percent from beyond the arc for a 46.1 percent effective field goal percentage in his season in the D-League. That included some spectacular performances, including an incredible eight 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and overtime to lead a 21-point comeback in December.

Harvey can undoubtedly light up a score board. He largely got drafted for leading the nation in scoring at Eastern Washington.

His assist and efficiency numbers were very low though and he did not seem to push his game forward significantly. Not in any way that breeds confidence he is ready to step up to the NBA level.

Harvey had to improve his defense and show he could be an efficient scorer to get a good NBA shot next year. Summer League will be another chance for the team to work with him.

NBA.com’s stats page for the D-League projects Harvey would would post 9.6 points per 36 minutes and 30.2 percent 3-point shooting in the NBA. That is not exactly encouraging.

As things stand, Harvey is not likely to take a second year in the D-League. In all likelihood, he plays with the Magic’s Summer League team and probably has one or two good games. He gets a look in training camp, but after that, who knows?
