Final Grade

Orlando Magic. ELFRID PAYTON. C.
Elfrid Payton is still a good player. He is still a player the Orlando Magic should plan to have as their starting point guard and be invested in. He can still move the ball and run an offense effectively. Injuries sapped him of his speed and knocked him and his team back some.
<div class=. PG

That brought out the inconsistencies in his game. The poor jump shot — that actually did improve some — the struggles learning how to play at the appropriate pace and working outside the pick and roll all effected the Magic negatively. Those were things a young point guard has to learn.

Payton though did put things together at times. When he did, he was really good and made the team significantly better. There was no getting around it, Payton became the key to the Magic through much of the year. His play was the difference between the Magic looking like a Lottery team and a Playoff team at times.

The Magic were as inconsistent as Payton was though. In his second season, perhaps the Magic could and should expect him to find his place a little bit better. That expectation will certainly be there for his third year. If he can build a more consistent — and healthy — season, then Payton can be the key to the Magic really taking a turn forward.
