2017 Outlook

Elfrid Payton should still be considered a part of the team’s core. The point guard position has become so important to the league that there is no reason to give up on a promising young player. Some of Payton’s growing pains had to be expected.

Still there were some basic things Payton did not seem to get and his inconsistency and stalled progress raised some concerns. Perhaps if a better option comes along, the Magic should be willing to part with him in favor of that option as Payton still has value.

The question is just how Payton will improve this offseason. Will he take the step forward and become a better leader and more consistent playmaker within this motion offense? Will he work on his jumper?

There was a lot of maturing he had to do. And a lot of it is learning how to control the pace and work without the ball. That is a big step ahead for Payton. One that he has to do to make his way in the NBA.

Rob Hennigan said during his exit interview that typically by the end of the rookie contract, players have established their roles. Through two years, Payton has shown a lot of promise but still has a lot of work to do.

The Magic should still feel confident that Payton is their starting point guard. But the questions have been raised and they have to watch and be wary of him should he have another inconsistent season next year.
