The Orlando Magic lost another late lead, but in building a lead showed some positive things. The finish though cannot be forgotten and clouds everything.

The Orlando Magic did everything you could ask of a team to win a game once again.

They built an 18-point lead heading into the third quarter with some brilliant ball movement and gritty, scrappy defense. The Magic were giving up a lot of points to the Oklahoma City Thunder’s superstars but had everything else under control it seemed.

Then Russell Westbrook took over. And the Magic could not stop the oncoming train.

Westbrook forced the game into overtime on a running 3-pointer from 38 feet after Victor Oladipo seemed to bury the game with a step-back 3-pointer with three seconds left.

The game would get crazier in overtime as Oladipo hit a game-tying 3-pointer with 0.3 seconds left to force a second overtime. But the Magic could not recover from there. They failed to convert on free throws early in the overtime and fell behind again.

Kevin Durant

blocked two shots in the corner as the Magic tried to tie the game and the Thunder escaped with the win.

Yes, Victor Oladipo recorded his second career triple double with 21 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists. Yes, he hit two big shots for the Magic late in this game — the go-ahead bucket in regulation to put the Magic up three with three seconds left and the game-tying 3-pointer in the first overtime with less than a second left.

Oladipo though continued to play pretty inefficiently and struggle to do the things the Magic need him to do on the offensive end. He shot 8 for 27 from the floor and took a ton of ill-advised or poor shots. His shot selection at times was part of what kept the Thunder in the game. He also committed five turnovers for the Magic.

In some sense it is a good sign Oladipo can produce these kinds of numbers and be a big part of the team even though he is not shooting efficiently. But the big sign of Oladipo’s struggles are the fact he had only two free throw attempts. More is being expected out of Oladipo these days. Filling up a box score is not enough.
. SG.
