Orlando Magic Daily Mailbag Volume 11: New beginnings
Nikola Vucevic, Victor Oladipo All Stars?
The short answer? Yes, I think both players are more than capable of making the All-Star team. Nikola Vucevic would have been on the All-Star team had the Magic been in the Playoff race. He got plenty of notice around the league for his strong play.
Both their numbers from last year suggest they can get to that level.
Nikola Vucevic averaged 19.3 points and 10.9 rebounds per game. He was more or less a sure double double and one of just four players to average at least 19 points per game and 10 rebounds per game last year. The other three were also all stars — LaMarcus Aldridge, Anthony Davis and DeMarcus Cousins.
Vucevic has been the Magic’s most consistent player. While he may not have the same ceiling as some of his teammates, he is already a really good player and someone the team can rely heavily on offensively.
Victor Oladipo is more of an up-and-comer. No one is quite sure what he can be. But the signs indicate he is going to put up some big numbers.
After the All-Star Break, Oladipo averaged 20.3 points per game and 4.5 assists per game. He really burst onto the scene and more consistently played like a primary option. He really looked like he was about to make the star turn. It will be interesting to see if he makes that step forward this season.
Does that make them All Stars? I do not know yet. A lot of All Star success has to do with team success.
If the team is playing well and in the Playoff race, both Vucevic and Oladipo (and Tobias Harris) have as good a shot as anyone to get the coach’s respect as a reserve.
