Who are the top trios in Orlando Magic history?
3) Anfernee Hardaway / Nick Anderson / Darrell Armstrong (1999)
For one year, the Orlando Magic were back on top.
It was really an ugly 50-game lockout season. But on top the Magic were, earning a split for the best record in the East with the Heat and the Pacers. That earned them a Playoff matchup with Allen Iverson and the 76ers (and another first round exit).
Before that point though, the Magic had a great season. The last great season for Anderson and Hardaway in their careers.
Hardaway averaged 15.8 points per game, 5.7 rebounds per game and 5.3 assists per game. He would average that much again in his career just one more time (his first year in Phoenix).
Nick Anderson averaged 14.9 points per game and 5.9 rebounds per game while shooting a 47.0 percent effective field goal percentage. Anderson was never the same as the Magic traded him the next year.
Armstrong was just blossoming. He won both Most Improved Player of the Year and Sixth Man of the Year.
It was a banner year for the Magic. Or really just a last hurrah. The team would break everything apart, severing all ties with the 1995 Finals team with the departure of Anderson and Hardaway the next summer.
The lockout year featured a lot of bad basketball. The Magic were certainly included in that. There was inefficient shooting and guys who were very out of shape. Teams needed players who could just carry them home.
The Magic had that in Hardaway and occasionally Anderson. Once the Playoffs came around, they just could not contain Allen Iverson. Otherwise, we might look at this team (with all the circumstances) and think a little more fondly of it.
The record speaks for itself, even if it was only in 50 games. This trio did its job and played extremely well.
