5) Tracy McGrady / Darrell Armstrong / Bo Outlaw (2001-02)

The early-2000s were a strange time in Magic history.

The whole decade was seemingly spent waiting on Grant Hill, while mixing and matching role players around Tracy McGrady and waiting for Hill. In the meantime, the Magic relied heavily on the trio of Tracy McGrady, Darrell Armstrong and Bo Outlaw for continuity.

The three played together from 2001-02 (the majority of two of McGrady’s four seasons). It could be easily argued the Magic really fell apart when they opted to trade Darrell Armstrong and entrust Tracy McGrady fully as the team’s leader. It was a position he ultimately seemed overwhelmed for.

Still, these were the three that defined the Magic for this era.

Armstrong and Outlaw were the key players left over from the Heart and Hustle era, the two players that seemed to embody that special team. McGrady was the superstar.

Despite their poor record and lack of Playoff success, this turned out to be a very good group for the Magic. The problem was perhaps that Armstrong and Outlaw had to be the other two of this trio. They just were not going to give McGrady the support he needed.
