Free Agency: 5 Bargain Point Guards for Orlando Magic
D.J. Augustin
D.J. Augustin is a water bug of a point guard at an even 6-foot, but Orlando Magic fans know that this is hardly an impediment to success after a decade of Jameer Nelson.
Augustin had a standout season with the Chicago Bulls in 2014, posting 15 points and five assists per game as the replacement guard for Derrick Rose in Chicago’s backcourt.
Augustin shot 41 percent from three that year, though he fell back to earth last season, knocking down 34 percent in a season split between Detroit and Oklahoma City.
He can score. Augustin would pair well with Evan Fournier in the second unit to provide shooting, and he has the ability to score a lot in stretches.
The Magic muddled around with the likes of Willie Green last year trying to fill this role, but Augustin could potentially do it far better. With the Thunder, he played 24 minutes per game in 28 appearances and averaged seven points and three assists per game.
Backing up Payton would be much like backing up Russell Westbrook.
Augustin was paid $3 million last season, and the Magic could likely reel him in for a similar deal. It is a pretty good value for a guy who is a dependable backup point guard at times capable of very good basketball.
