NBA Draft: Who is Tyler Harvey?
The Good
Where else can you start with Harvey but with his scoring?
That is likely the sole reason he got drafted in the first place. The fact he was the top scorer in the NCAA is reason enough to give a guy a look.
So how did he get his points?
Efficiently for one. Harvey shot 46.9 percent from the floor, 43.1 percent from beyond the arc and 85.2 percent from the foul line. His effective field goal percentage last season came in at an even 60.0 percent and his true shooting percentage came in at 65.0 percent.
Those are incredibly strong numbers for someone who scored so much and had to carry a large amount of the scoring load for his team. Sure it was in the Big Sky, but in four games against Power-5 schools (plus the Big East) last season, Harvey still averaged 26.0 points per game with a 47.2 percent field goal percentage, 46.5 percent 3-point field goal percentage, a 60.8 percent effective field goal percentage and a 63.5 percent true shooting percentage.
Harvey just knew how to put the ball in the basket.
Watching his highlights, it is hard not to think (even a little) about Stephen Curry. His dribble is pretty quick and his step back and jumper seem even quicker. He can attack off the dribble to put the defense off balance to step back and fire. And his range feels relatively unlimited as he can step back several steps behind the college 3-point line to hit a shot.
As noted above, his stats did not waver when the competition (at least by reputation) increased.
Harvey is a pure shooter in every sense of the word and giving him an inch will be costly for a defense.
