Final Grade
He scored and generated offense for himself. He improved as a 3-point shooter and was slightly better as a defender. Jacque Vaughn, at least, trusted him enough to go minute-for-minute with LeBron James. Who knows whether the Magic would have won that game had he not poked the bear and gotten James angry.
For Harris, he decided to invest in himself. He turned down a reportedly low ball offer and proved he will deserve much more than the Magic were willing to pay last summer. He was not Nikola Vucevic, taking a less than ideal offer rather than testing the market.
Harris’ decision will definitely pay off. The Magic will have a decision to make.
For as divisive as Tobias Harris’ future might be within the organization and, certainly, within fans, Harris played exactly how we all expected. Maybe he did not take a far enough step forward. Maybe he did not carve himself a defined spot in the Magic’s future. Maybe he is a player best suited for a losing team like the Magic without a clear role for a winning team.
It is hard to say Tobias Harris is anything definitive still. Now comes the weight of a big contract and expectation to do more and grow more.
