2016 Outlook

Ben Gordon’s second year of his two-year deal is unguaranteed. So Rob Hennigan’s little $4.5 million per year gamble on Ben Gordon was just a one-year gamble.

It seems very unlikely with the production Gordon gave — and how sparingly and inconsistently he was used throughout the season — that he will be back in any capacity this upcoming season.

This was, unfortunately, what we all seemed to expect. The only way Gordon probably could have gotten that second year guaranteed was if he played out of his mind and returned to a solid sixth man. The numbers from the past five years suggested he would not. And so he fulfilled his role of taking up a space on the roster — a risk with little downside at the end of the day.

The question for Gordon moving forward is where he fits in the NBA if at all.

Gordon said at the beginning of the season that he hoped to prove he could still play in the NBA. He was truly on his last legs this year.

Did he accomplish that goal?

Yes, he showed he could still play and contribute in the NBA. But maybe not in the featured role the Magic seemed to hope. He needed to be more of a bit player.

Will that get him another contract in the league? That seems to be a bigger question left unanswered.
