As way of background for those who do not follow on Twitter, I have been pretty high on giving Spurs assistant Ettore Messina a chance at being the head coach. I think it is a risk worth taking as Messina has a proven winning record as a Euroleague coach and some NBA experience. I think he could develop into a winning coach in the NBA.

But it is a risk because he has no NBA experience. Rob Hennigan would be tying more or less his entire run as general manager on this coach, especially since his first coach failed so seriously.

I have floated the idea of Ettore Messina since it became clear Jacque Vaughn was not going to be the team’s head coach and kept it private. Marc Stein’s report the Thunder were interested in Messina opened up the floodgates to wild speculation to legitimate rumor. It could actually happen.

Looking at how the Magic have approached this coaching search — it seems like Messina is not a realistic option for them.

Orlando wants a coach with coaching experience. Thibodeau is the clear leading candidate for the Magic. They seem to be waiting on him.

After that, the money is on Scott Brooks or Scott Skiles. Both are currently available. Skiles, at the moment, does not seem to be in demand at all.

So it would seem the Magic are comfortable with the list of coaches they have or that their fall back coach will be waiting for them. It seems he is.

But, who knows?

Messina is not in high demand, the Magic should be second in line with coaches and with the rumors Alvin Gentry is interviewing with the Pelicans, Thibodeau could very well be the Magic’s if they can pry him from Chicago.
