The way James Borrego’s Magic team came out of the gates — sitting at 4-5 right now — brought a lot of optimism about his chances to keep the head coach job past the end of the season. He has dramatically improved the team’s defense and the players have responded to his coaching.
Could Borrego do enough to keep his job? It probably would have taken a wild and crazy ride to get to the Playoffs or near Playoffs to assure him the job. An interview this summer? Maybe he has earned that.
The problem still remains that this is a team with several offensive flaws and that was not going to change with a change at the top. This is still a team forming an identity. Always a good thing 60 games into a season.
