7) The Best Second Unit Lineup (used during run): PG- Willie Green, SG- Evan Fournier, SF- Harris, PF- Aaron Gordon, C- Kyle O’Quinn
It is a second team that features a good perimeter defender in Green, a shooter in Fournier, pure scorer in Harris, and a two young big men that are developing. This lineup made far more sense since the Magic could not match the Pistons in the paint. Out run them. It just did not last long enough. And by the time Vaughn went to his starters, the Detroit lead had begun to bloat again.
It is always a coach’s job to put the best unit on the floor, and that seems to be one of Vaughn’s greatest weaknesses. The second unit can be great as it was tonight, but it requires leaving some talent on it. The Sixth Man award would not exist if such players were not so elemental in winning games.
In recent games, Victor Oladipo was spending time to get the second unit some buckets. Having a natural sixth man in Harris would save Victor for when he is most needed. Tonight, Oladipo played 34 minutes. That is about perfect. Giving guys 40 a game leads to injury (as proven by Tom Thibodeau and Derrick Rose).
