Orlando Magic News & Notes: Replacing Jameer

Jameer Nelson is out for four-to-six weeks with a torn labrum.

Brian Schmitz says that Otis Smith has not ruled out signing Allen Iverson.

"“It’s hard to say. You have to evaluate it. But it has to make sense for your team,” he said. “I just got the news (on Nelson) a few hours ago, so I can’t rule out anything yet. You have to take a step back. That’s how we’ve done things.”Asked specifically about Iverson — who split with the Memphis Grizzlies recently — he said, “He’s still out there, isn’t he?”Meaning nobody else has gobbled him up. Smith said of AI, “I think he’ll be on somebody’s roster before the year is over.”“I’m not in a hurry to do anything. We will do our due dilligence. We have two point guards and another who will be out four to six weeks.”"

George Diaz thinks that Iverson is the answer to Orlando’s problems.

"The Answer is your answer.Anybody else know of another 10-time All-Star and league MVP who is available at the moment? Cheap, too. We’re talking Dollar Store prices in the NBA economy, because Iverson becomes an unrestricted free agent tonight after his release by the Memphis Grizzlies. All Rich DeVos has to do is cut a check for $1.8 million, take a deep breath, and not get too caught up in the specifics of Iverson’s problems. Selfish, disruptive, petulant, among other adjectives, come to mind.So what? Orlando doesn’t need him for the whole year. The Magic just need him to fill in for point guard Jameer Nelson, who is now officially one of the most fragile players in the NBA. He is expected to miss four to six weeks after undergoing arthroscopic surgery today to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee."

Benson Taylor says that Nelson’s injury could open the door for Orlando’s bench to produce.

"“It’s going to help us deep into the season, when guys get banged up,” Lewis told Sporting News last week. “Mostly in the playoffs. And when the starters are tired and we’re not into the game that night, we have just as good a bench that can come in and take over for the rest of the night.”"

The Orlando Magic will take on the Oklahoma City Thunder Wednesday night. See my game preview here.

Don’t forget that Wednesday night is Vince Carter Bobblehead night.

Josh Robbins says that Jason Williams is in for a challenge in his first start.

"Jason Williams faces a tough task tonight in his first game as the Orlando Magic’s starting point guard. He will defend Oklahoma City’s Russell Westbrook, who torched the Magic by scoring 17 points and dishing out 10 assists in the Thunder’s convincing victory 10 days ago.Williams will celebrate his 34th birthday today. Westbrook turned 21 last Thursday. You don’t need to remind the Magic of how dangerous the Thunder can be — not after the Magic lost in Oklahoma City 102-74 on Nov. 8."

Per Alex Kennedy of Hoops World, Antonio Daniels’ agent, Tony Dutt is in Orlando and expects to meet with the Magic today.
