2019 Outlook

When it comes to the NBA Draft, one of the biggest obsessions for Magic fans is at the point guard position. Everyone knows the Magic do not currently have a long-term solution at point guard. And that has everyone focused on spending this draft pick to address a need. Whether that is the right decision is another matter.

Orlando very well could draft a player like Luka Doncic, Trae Young or Collin Sexton and reinvest in a young point guard for their future. That would push D.J. Augustin back to the bench. That would probably suit him better in the long run.

Orlando had to play Augustin as a starter for most of the season. That is not likely his ideal role. Even though he performed it admirably.

When he was a starter, Augustin averaged 11.7 points and 5.0 assists per game, shooting 42.3 percent from beyond the arc. No one is going to be upset with that production from him.

Orlando is not going to ask him ever to be a main creator or scorer. He just needs to score and hit open shots when the ball comes his way and initiate the offense.

The Magic are not going to fix all of its problems in one summer. They have a lot of issues to resolve. And point guard is one of them. That does not make it the most important.

The Magic are not going to make a ton of noise if Augustin remains the team’s starting point guard next year. And that would not be ideal.

But it would not be the end of the world either. Not if Augustin continues his strong run of play from the 2018 season. He was more than capable of holding the boat steady and giving the Magic consistent, solid production.

That will likely mean Augustin can play that role again next year. That is if he does not have a market value that could return the Magic something else they want.
