Seth Curry has the family name and the intrigue of fans. But can he crack the Magic's roster? Photo by Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

Seth Curry shooting for a chance

No player during Summer League generated more questions and more interest than Seth Curry. The name alone is enough to draw a fan in and wonder what could be. Seth is not anywhere near as skilled a point guard or even as proficient a shooter as his older brother, Stephen. But he is still a […]

Magic Wheels still rolling, still winning in more ways than one

I remember when I was in elementary school going to Magic games and maybe once or twice a year, the Magic Wheels would take the court and play an exhibition game as a halftime show. As a six- or seven-year-old kid, this idea of wheelchair basketball was astounding. How do you play basketball confined to […]

The Nikola Vucevic conundrum

From the moment Nikola Vucevic proved to be a double-double machine, it became clear what the first big test for Rob Hennigan and his “Process” would be. How do you evaluate Nikola Vucevic’s worth? The whole — maybe not the whole, but a good chunk — of the Magic’s financial flexibility for the future and […] gives Magic offseason a ‘C’

“There is rebuilding, and then there is leveling the entire structure and starting from scratch. And while some teams, such as the Sixers, have seemed to be more inclined to the latter, the Magic are now reaching a point of critical mass, where all the assets need to stop translating into promise and instead transform into wins.

GM Rob Hennigan and Vaughn are starting their third season in Orlando, and while Orlando may not be quite magical yet, it has some nice building blocks in place. Nikola Vucevic should start in the NBA for the next decade, and Victor Oladipo was one of the NBA’s best rookies last season. Gordon and Payton are both solid prospects. But for a team that won 23 games last season, playing in one of the most competitive divisions in the NBA, none of the moves made this summer seem designed to make a massive immediate impact.”

Magic rank 21st in NBA in ESPN Ultimate Standings

ESPN the Magazine unveiled its annual ranking of the best franchise in American sports. Predictably the Magic did not fare too well considering how poorly the team has played — 43 wins in the last two years. But there are still signs of encouragement. Orlando finished 21st among NBA team and 78th among the 122 […]

It’s Magic vs. City in Brand Madness

With the USL-Pro season ending, Orlando officially has two major sports teams in town. The Lions will not hit the Citrus Bowl again until March, but in the last three years they have really taken the community by storm. The games are packed, loud and exciting. The winning and championships help too. Everyone has noticed, including […]

Orlando Magic Daily Podcast Episode 24: The season is nigh

The winter summer of our discontent is nearly over. The NBA returns with training camps opening in two weeks. We CANNOT wait.

The Magic’s players have finished their international duties and many are probably lurking around the back rooms of Amway Center while Demi Lovato and Cirque Du Soleil’s Varekai come through. The sneakers will still be squeaking and balls bouncing as the season comes up very very quickly.

The Magic have a very interesting season coming up here in Year Three of this pretty major rebuild after the big Dwight Howard trade. The Magic might have ended up winning that trade, but the team is still far from making the Playoffs and far from winning a title.

On this episode of the Orlando Magic Daily Podcast, we are joined by Zach Oliver of Presto in the Paint to take a look at some of the overarching themes we will be following this year.

Here are some of the topics we touched on:

  • Expectations for rookies Aaron Gordon and Elfrid Payton
  • The versatility present on the roster and where these players fit in and what their roles might be
  • Where the offense will come from this year for the Magic
  • What to expect from the Magic’s newcomers this year and what they add to the team
  • The extension status for Nikola Vucevic and his worth
  • Where the Magic stand in their rebuild and what they need to accomplish this year
  • A strange non sequitur to Shawn Kemp’s glorious year in Orlando
  • Expectations for the team this year
  • Whether winning is even important this year with the young players taking control
  • The Magic’s potential to get better and who might be available if they opt to go the trade route
  • Some quick thoughts on the 2015 Draft
  • The four players invited to training camp and their chances of making the roster

Owners fear who is next after Hawks owner steps down

Mark Cuban warned about the precedent that was set when Adam Silver expelled Donald Sterling from the NBA and forced him to sell the Los Angeles Clippers. When the next racist comment came out, the penalty was swift and accepted by the perpetrator. There was no fighting it. Things got worse when news broke of what […]

Magic invite four to camp, all likely headed to D-League

The Magic are preparing to round out their training camp roster, and maybe add a few more to the Erie BayHawks while they are at it. Brian Schmitz of the Orlando Sentinel reports the Magic will invite Summer League roster invitees Seth Curry and Kadeem Betts along with previously announced signing Peyton Siva to the […]

Evan Fournier: Clearly I turned a corner

“Clearly I turned a corner, I learned from a lot of veterans, the coach, about the FIBA game because it’d been three years and I had not played. The last time was in 2011 with the U-20 team. I am very happy to have been part of this World Cup and it will serve me for the NBA this year.”

Be on the look out for Mag_c downtown

It is not quite replacing the ‘a’ with a star — which the M☆gic need to do with their logo IMMEDIATELY — but the Magic will be helping fans and engaging with fans in a new way in preparation for the season. Matthew Broffman of Bungalower reports the Magic will be installing a 6.5-feet-tall, 28-feet-wide […]

How do we build up atmosphere at Amway Center?

Orlando City’s final USL Pro season came to a disheartening and disappointing end Saturday night as the eighth-seeded Harrisburg City Islanders upset the regular season champions and ended a long-standing home unbeaten streak that spans the entire 2013 season at Disney’s Wide World of Sports and much of the 2012 season at the Citrus Bowl. Orlando […]

Evan Fournier, France win bronze medal at FIBA World Cup

Evan Fournier played in only 16 minutes, scoring four points off four free throws and missing all four of his shots.

That is probably not what he will remember from this game or from this tournament. France defeated Lithuania 95-93 to secure the bronze medal. This game was all about Boris Diaw, who scored 15 points, Nicolas Batum, who had 27 points, and about France’s 31-22 fourth quarter. Before the third quarter it looked like Jonas Valanciunas and Lithuania would pull away and secure the medal.

France though just appears to have Lithuania’s number.

Les Bleus defeated Lithuania in last summer’s Eurobasket final.
